CJ Logistics Adds Small Parcel Automated Sorters at 40 More Locations

CJ Logistics Adds Small Parcel Automated Sorters at 40 More Locations CJ Logistics' small parcel sorting machine 'MP (Multi Point)' is automatically sorting products.

[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] CJ Logistics announced on the 4th that it plans to additionally install the automated facility ‘MP (Multi Point)’ that automatically sorts small parcel delivery items at 40 sub-terminals where delivery drivers work this year.

Since starting the pilot operation of the MP system in November 2019, installation has been completed at 42 sub-terminals to date. CJ Logistics plans to invest about 140 billion KRW to deploy MP automated facilities at a total of 82 locations by the end of this year.

The MP operates simultaneously with the existing automated sorter ‘Wheel Sorter’. According to the size of the delivery items, medium to large items are automatically sorted by the Wheel Sorter, and small items are sorted by the MP. In particular, with both the Wheel Sorter and MP operating simultaneously, productivity has increased and sorting time has been shortened.

CJ Logistics also invested 7.5 billion KRW to build the ‘MP Hub Terminal’, a facility dedicated to handling small parcel delivery items. The pilot operation began in September last year. The MP Hub Terminal operates by exclusively handling small items bundled in batches of 20 using the MPs installed at sub-terminals. Since small items are grouped by the same destination for relay, efficiency has improved compared to the previous method of processing items individually.

The company expects that the advancement of automated equipment such as the Wheel Sorter and MP, along with the deployment of support personnel, will significantly reduce delivery drivers’ working hours and intensity. Furthermore, based on on-site automation and support personnel, the autonomy to determine delivery start times and methods is also expected to increase.

A CJ Logistics official said, “We have established the automated facility MP and MP Hub Terminal, which can efficiently handle small parcel delivery items for the first time in the delivery industry,” and added, “We are striving to improve delivery drivers’ working conditions through continuous on-site automation.”
