"Download a Movie in 6 Seconds" Samsung Achieves Top Speed by Simultaneously Utilizing 5G and 4G

Industry's Fastest 5.23Gbps Download Speed Recorded

[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Samsung Electronics has recorded the industry's highest download speed using dual connectivity technology that simultaneously utilizes 28 gigahertz (GHz) band 5G base stations and 4G LTE base stations.

Samsung Electronics announced on the 4th that it successfully demonstrated a 5.23Gbps download speed using a 28GHz band 5G integrated base station, 1.9 and 2.1GHz band 4G LTE base stations, and commercial products such as the Galaxy S20+ smartphone at Samsung Digital City in Suwon. This speed allows downloading a 4GB full HD movie in about 6 seconds.

Last year, Samsung Electronics demonstrated MU-MIMO (Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) using a 28GHz band 5G integrated base station and two test terminals, achieving a 4.25Gbps download speed on a single terminal.

This demonstration utilized dual connectivity technology where 4G LTE and 5G base stations network with the terminal simultaneously. It reaffirmed that adding 5G millimeter-wave band base stations to the existing nationwide 4G LTE base stations enables faster and more stable ultra-high-speed communication services.

Mobile carriers can efficiently provide ultra-high-speed communication services by installing 5G millimeter-wave band base stations in areas with concentrated data traffic such as Gangnam Station or sports stadiums, and users can enjoy the best service stably even in the initially limited coverage environment of 5G services.
