Starting from February 24th this year in Sinnae1-dong, weekly alley cleaning scheduled... Alley cleaning continued since 2018... 2,233 participants swept and cleaned 68.736km
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] “I used to walk the same path every day without much thought, even when it was littered and dirty, but seeing it clean after the early morning cleaning today makes me feel very rewarded.”
This is what Kim, a young resident of Sinnae-dong who participated in the alley cleaning, said.
The alley cleaning with residents organized by Jungnang-gu (District Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) will continue in 2021 as well.
Since the district office initiated alley cleaning with the district mayor in July 2018, this year marks the fourth year of the program, which kicked off its 2021 activities on the 24th of last month in Sinnae 1-dong.
Since his inauguration in July 2018, Jungnang-gu Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi has been conducting early morning alley cleanings with residents. To date, the 78th session has seen 2,233 participants and covered a working distance of 68.736 km.
Following the weekly alley cleanings, a voluntary cleaning culture has developed among residents, with many taking the initiative to clean themselves. This year, the district plans to select 300 households?double the number from last year?as ‘THE Clean House,’ recognizing those who voluntarily lead cleaning efforts in front of their homes.
Additionally, the district will designate ‘Housefront Waste Disposal Nameplates’ to over 500 households to promote a self-cleaning atmosphere. To maintain clean streets continuously, the district will also persistently promote the Clean Alley Cleaning Job Project, aiming to create a clean Jungnang-gu where residents clean autonomously.
Jungnang-gu Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi said, “In 2021, the Year of the White Ox, we will steadily continue alley cleaning with the spirit of ‘Ubo Cheonri (牛步千里)’?meaning ‘slow but steady progress’?and spare no effort in making Jungnang clean.”
Meanwhile, last year, each neighborhood community center carried out special projects to prevent illegal dumping. These included installing fences to block illegal dumping and operating bulletin boards displaying images of offenders caught on CCTV, among various other unique initiatives to curb illegal dumping.
As a result, complaints related to cleaning decreased by 27%, from 4,557 cases in 2019 to 3,326 cases in 2020.
