[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] On the afternoon of the 3rd, Lee Yong-seop, Mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, met with Michael Donaher, Canadian Ambassador to Korea, at City Hall to discuss cooperation plans between Gwangju and Canada in areas including environment, human rights, and industry.
Mayor Lee welcomed the ambassador's visit to Gwangju, saying, "I welcome your visit to Gwangju and hope you will cooperate to further enhance the relationship between Gwangju and Canada in various fields such as environment, human rights, and industry."
He continued, "Gwangju is advancing as an AI-centered city by establishing a national AI convergence complex, and we aim to create Gwangju's unique competitiveness by combining artificial intelligence with competitive sectors such as automobile manufacturing, energy industry, healthcare, and cultural content."
He also said, "The 13th Gwangju Biennale, held this year, will be organized as an event commemorating the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement, and works by Canadian artists will be showcased in various ways. I ask for your active interest and support."
In addition, he added, "I understand that Canada has many experts related to human rights, and I hope many Canadian experts will participate in the World Human Rights Cities Forum held every September."
Ambassador Michael Donaher said, "Canada and Korea share various interests in industries, environment, and human rights. It was meaningful for me as an ambassador to pay respects at the National May 18 Democratic Cemetery during this visit to Gwangju, and I will strive to ensure Canada's continuous participation in the globally renowned cultural event, the Gwangju Biennale."
He also stated, "We will actively cooperate in joint research and other areas in Gwangju's eco-friendly vehicle industry sector."
He added, "I have a steady interest in the World Human Rights Cities Forum. Canada will share its experiences at the forum with Gwangju and join Gwangju's steps toward the future."
