Sejong City Establishes Dedicated Organization for 'Hangeul Promotion'... Leading the Foundation of a Hangeul City

[Asia Economy (Sejong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Sejong City will establish and operate a dedicated organization for the promotion of Hangul. The dedicated organization is expected to play a leading role in developing Sejong as a Hangul city.

On the 3rd, the city announced that it has established a dedicated organization for Hangul promotion called the ‘Hangul Promotion Division’ to build a foundation for a Hangul-loving city.

The Hangul Promotion Division was newly created within the Education Support Department of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau and will oversee all tasks related to the promotion of Hangul and the Korean language in the region.

Previously, in January 2014, the city enacted the ‘Sejong City Hangul Love Support Ordinance’ to establish an institutional foundation for developing Sejong as a Hangul city. Since then, it has continuously discovered and implemented policies related to Hangul promotion.

In particular, last year, the city established the ‘2020 Hangul Love Five-Year Promotion Plan’ in cooperation with the Korea University Sejong Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation. This year, the city plans to use this as a stepping stone to strengthen Hangul promotion policies.

Lee Chun-hee, Mayor of Sejong City, said, “The promotion of Hangul policies in Sejong, which inherits the spirit of King Sejong, holds great significance,” and added, “We hope for much interest and participation from citizens throughout the entire process of building the foundation of a Hangul city.”
