Abolition of Prosecutors' Direct Investigation Rights: Support 41.2% vs Oppose 49.7% [Realmeter]

Pro and Con Opinions Split Within Margin of Error
Clear Contrast by Region and Ideological Tendency

[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Public opinion on the abolition of the prosecution's direct investigative authority showed a slight majority opposing it, with opinions evenly split within the margin of error.


According to Realmeter's announcement on the 3rd, based on a survey commissioned by OhmyNews conducted on the 2nd targeting 500 men and women aged 18 and over, 49.7% responded that they oppose the 'abolition of the prosecution's direct investigative authority.' Those in favor accounted for 41.2%, while 9.2% answered that they were unsure.

By region, the approval and disapproval rates varied. In Gwangju and Jeolla, support was dominant at 60.9% versus 39.1% opposition, whereas in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, opposition was higher at 73.0% compared to 19.6% support. In Seoul (42.5% vs. 49.4%) and Incheon-Gyeonggi (45.4% vs. 39.2%), opinions were more evenly divided.


By age group, those aged 60 and above and those over 70 showed the highest opposition at 60.5% and 59.5%, respectively. In contrast, the 40s age group showed a majority in favor at 56.1%, differing from other age groups. The 50s (49.7% vs. 45.6%) and 20s (36.0% vs. 43.2%) age groups were more evenly split.


By ideological inclination, the difference between support and opposition was stark. Among progressives, 65.6% supported the abolition while 25.6% opposed it, whereas conservatives showed the opposite trend with 20.0% in favor and 66.4% opposed.


The same pattern was observed by political party support. Among Democratic Party supporters, 8 out of 10 (81.8%) responded that they support the abolition, while among People Power Party supporters, 8 out of 10 (79.6%) opposed it.
