Harvard Undergraduate Council Issues Statement... Demands Apology and Urges Response from President and Dean

Harvard University Students Also Criticize Professor Ramseyer Mark Ramseyer, Professor at Harvard Law School

[Asia Economy Reporter Minwoo Lee] Students at Harvard University in the United States also criticized Harvard Law School professor Mark Ramseyer, who claimed that the Japanese military comfort women were 'voluntary prostitutes.'

On the 1st (local time), the Harvard Crimson, the university's newspaper, reported that the Harvard Undergraduate Council issued a statement criticizing Professor Ramseyer last weekend at the request of Korean international students.

In the statement, the student council pointed out that Ramseyer's paper, "Contracting for Sex in the Pacific War," undermined the integrity of law and history and demanded an official apology. They also urged Harvard University President Lawrence Bacow and Harvard Law School Dean John Manning to clarify their official stance on the paper. They demanded that the International Review of Law and Economics (IRLE), the journal in which the paper was published, acknowledge the possibility of flaws in the paper.

Previously, Professor Ramseyer faced worldwide criticism for publishing a paper claiming that Japanese military comfort women participated in prostitution on the battlefield based on rational contracts.
