[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Soyoung] In a parking lot in Pangyo, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, a man in his 20s is facing criticism for climbing onto the hood of someone else's foreign luxury car to take a proof photo.
On the 28th of last month, a post appeared on an online community along with submitted photos, stating, "Live from Pangyo, Bentley guy. He climbed onto someone else's Bentley to take a proof shot and smoked a cigarette. He is said to be 20 years old."
In the released photos, the man is seen sitting on the hood of a black car or attempting to climb onto a blue-toned SUV. On the black car's hood, he even settled down, holding a cigarette and posing. With one foot stepping on the vehicle and one hand resting on the front windshield, he leaned against it.
The vehicles the man climbed on are estimated to be a Bentley worth around 300 million KRW and a Land Rover Range Rover valued between 180 million KRW and 214 million KRW.
Netizens criticized the man's behavior and insisted that appropriate compensation should be made to the car owners. In such cases, if the vehicle is damaged, charges of property damage may also apply. In fact, in April last year in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, a man in his 20s was booked without detention and investigated by the police for kicking a parked Bentley, charged with property damage.
The post received a comment from a netizen claiming to have been present at the scene. According to this netizen, the photos were taken two years ago after drinking when the person was 18 years old.
This netizen stated, "At that time, the Range Rover owner had moved, and the Bentley owner communicated through a driver on their behalf." He added, "The Bentley owner forgave the person considering his young age."
Meanwhile, there were two incidents last April where intoxicated individuals caused damage to expensive foreign cars. Around midnight on April 19 last year, a man kicked the passenger door of a Bentley passing through a busy alley in Paldal-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do. When the car owner came out to protest, the man grabbed his collar. He was eventually booked on charges of property damage and assault. On April 23 last year, a man was criminally charged near Gangnam Station in Seoul for damaging an expensive foreign passenger car and assaulting the car owner while intoxicated.
