[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jin-young] Kim Tae-nyeon, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, responded on the 2nd to the opposition party's criticism of disaster relief funds as "vote-buying," saying, "It is no different from a declaration of giving up on people's livelihood, demanding the suspension of all livelihood support measures ahead of the by-elections."
At the floor strategy meeting held at the National Assembly that day, Floor Leader Kim said, "The People Power Party is engaging in political attacks that should not be made, calling it populism and vote-buying."
He pointed out, "Only a month ago, the opposition party was advocating for substantial compensation for self-employed and small business owners affected by COVID-19, but ahead of the election, they are showing a two-faced political behavior turning to political strife. The 4th disaster relief fund was organized reflecting a significant portion of the opposition party's proposals. Nevertheless, it is regrettable and unfortunate that the People Power Party attacks the government and ruling party with 'two-faced politics' accusing it of electioneering vote-buying."
Floor Leader Kim added, "Countries around the world are enduring astronomical expenditures and are fully committed to supporting COVID-19 damage and economic recovery. Despite the opposition party's declaration of giving up on people's livelihood, ignoring the people's suffering and focusing only on vote calculation, the Democratic Party will do its utmost."
