2021 ICLEI (International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives) Conference ... Expected Role of Leading Cities in Urban Agriculture Sector
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) announced that on the 23rd of last month, Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, was appointed as the ICLEI Korea Executive Committee member in the field of urban agriculture at the ‘2021 ICLEI Regular Meeting’.
ICLEI (International Council For Local Environmental Initiatives) is a global network of local governments aiming for low-carbon, resilient, circular resource use, nature-based, and people-centered fair development. It was officially launched in 1990 under the sponsorship of the United Nations (UN) for global sustainable development through local actions. Currently, it includes over 1,750 cities and local governments from more than 120 countries worldwide.
The Korea Executive Committee (K-ExCom) was established as a decision-making body for the business and operational direction of the ICLEI Korea Office, serving as a focal point for policy leadership among ICLEI Korean member local governments. It was officially launched at a regular meeting.
The inaugural Korea Executive Committee consists of ▲ Yeom Tae-young, Mayor of Suwon and ICLEI Korea representative ▲ Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Seoul Gangdong-gu, elected as policy representative in the urban agriculture sector ▲ Heo Tae-jung, Mayor of Daejeon Metropolitan City (sustainable consumption and production sector) ▲ Heo Seong-moo, Mayor of Changwon (biodiversity sector) ▲ Kim Hong-jang, Mayor of Dangjin (climate and energy sector) ▲ Seo Cheol-mo, Mayor of Hwaseong (ecological transportation sector) ▲ and Park Yeon-hee, Director of the ICLEI Korea Office.
Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon of Gangdong-gu said, “Our Gangdong-gu has been recognized externally for its competitiveness by winning the ‘Korea Environmental Award’ in the public sector urban agriculture field for 10 consecutive years. We will fulfill our role as an ICLEI Korea Executive Committee city by sharing policies with member cities to contribute know-how for sustainable development, which is ICLEI’s goal requiring a proper balance between urban ecology and urban development.”
