Gwangju City Creates Eco-Friendly Outdoor Permanent Performance Venue at Sajik Park

Gwangju City Creates Eco-Friendly Outdoor Permanent Performance Venue at Sajik Park Sajik Park Outdoor Permanent Performance Venue Perspective View

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City is creating an eco-friendly outdoor permanent performance venue in Sajik Park, Nam-gu, where cultural and artistic exchanges, performances, and seasonal music festivals are held regularly, and citizen participation activities are supported.

To establish the performance venue, Gwangju City received approval from the City Urban Park Committee on the 23rd and formulated the Sajik Park Development Plan. Once investment reviews and other procedures are completed, design work will begin in the second half of this year, with the venue expected to be completed by 2023, the city announced on the 28th.

The site for the outdoor performance venue was used as an outdoor swimming pool in the 1970s and 1980s. After the pool was closed in 1986, the area remained as a playground.

The venue will accommodate 600 to 900 seats and will be constructed on a 3,200㎡ site with an outdoor stage and performance hall. Separate parking lots and access roads will also be secured, with the project budget estimated at 19 billion KRW.

In particular, the terrain and shape of the former swimming pool site will be maximally utilized to create an eco-friendly grassy plaza for the seating area, providing visitors a citizen-friendly space where they can momentarily escape daily life, relax, and enjoy performances.

Additionally, an access road will be secured to allow direct entry from the Tongkita Street entrance of Sajik Park to the performance venue. Improvements to the slope of existing roads and the application of universal design in pedestrian pathways will focus on ensuring convenience for vulnerable pedestrians such as the elderly, pregnant women, and people with disabilities.

Moreover, approximately 130 parking spaces will be created near Yangnim-dong Tongkita Street. Except during event periods, this parking lot will be available for local residents' convenience and visitors to nearby Tongkita Street, contributing to the revitalization of the local commercial district.

Kim Jun-young, Director of the City’s Culture, Tourism, and Sports Office, said, “Once the outdoor performance venue is established in Sajik Park, it will be used as a multipurpose performance facility not only for various music festivals such as the Sound Park Festival but also as a picnic space for the general public.” He added, “We will do our best to contribute to the Asia Culture Center City Cultural Hall Exchange Zone project and the revitalization of the old downtown area.”
