[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] African Swine Fever (ASF) has occurred in Malaysia, prompting the government to strengthen border quarantine measures for travelers entering from the affected country.
On the 27th, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced that the Malaysian Ministry of Agriculture urgently reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) the occurrence of ASF in Sabah, northern Borneo Island, the previous day.
This is the first time ASF has occurred in Malaysia.
Earlier, on the 21st, when Malaysian media reported the possibility of ASF occurring at pig farms in the country, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs took preemptive border quarantine measures equivalent to those for affected countries.
Travelers coming from Malaysia will be fined between 5 million and 10 million KRW if they illegally bring in livestock products.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs requested, "If you visit ASF-affected countries, please avoid visiting pig farms and livestock facilities locally, and carrying livestock products such as ham and sausages when entering the country is prohibited, so please actively cooperate with border quarantine."
