Half of Last Year's Global TV Market Share Belongs to Korean Brands... Samsung 1st, LG 2nd

[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] It has been revealed that nearly half of the global TV market share last year belonged to Korean brand TVs. Amid the surge in TV sales due to increased 'stay-at-home' demand caused by the COVID-19 pandemic last year, the strong performance of Korean brands Samsung and LG has drawn attention.

According to market research firm Omdia on the 28th, Korean brands accounted for 48.4% of the global TV market share by sales last year. Samsung Electronics ranked first with a 31.9% share, followed by LG Electronics in second place with 16.5%.

Last year, Samsung Electronics set a record high market share and maintained its position as the industry leader for 15 consecutive years, while LG Electronics surpassed 2 million units in OLED TV shipments, proving its potential in the premium market.

The reason Samsung Electronics achieved its highest-ever market share was due to its effective strategy focusing on QLED and large-sized TVs. Since selling 700,000 QLED TVs in 2017, Samsung steadily increased sales to 2.6 million units in 2018 and 5.32 million units in 2019. Last year, it sold 7.79 million units, raising its share of total TV sales revenue to 35.5%.

This year, Samsung Electronics plans to globally launch 'Neo QLED' in March, which applies Quantum Mini LED technology and features completely renewed picture quality, design, and sound. At the same time, it aims to pioneer the ultra-premium TV market with 'Micro LED,' a self-emissive display that emits both light and color independently.

LG Electronics intends to prove its competitiveness in the premium TV market by surpassing 2 million units in annual OLED TV shipments. In the fourth quarter of last year, OLED TV shipments exceeded 1 million units per quarter, and its market share reached an all-time high, gaining attention as a next-generation product line.

Omdia forecasts that the OLED TV market will grow to 5.6 million units this year, an increase of over 60% compared to the previous year. LG Electronics also expects sales growth of up to twice that of the previous year. LG's OLED TVs emit light from each individual pixel without a backlight, allowing for more delicate picture quality expression. They are recognized in the market for their overwhelming contrast ratio, black expression, and excellent viewing angles, showcasing differentiated technology.
