Through Twitter on the same day, Governor Lee said, "After more than 70 years of winter, a warm spring breeze is blowing in Jeju," and added, "With the passage of the 4.3 Special Act, not only will the history of the Republic of Korea be newly written, but I sincerely hope it will bring great comfort to the victims' families and survivors who have endured unjust times."
Earlier, the National Assembly overwhelmingly passed the "Special Act on the Investigation of the Truth and Restoration of Honor for the Victims of the Jeju 4.3 Incident" on the same day.
The bill includes provisions such as ▲establishing special retrial regulations for victims of the Jeju 4.3 Incident ▲allowing the "Jeju 4.3 Incident Truth Investigation and Victims' Honor Restoration Committee" to recommend the Minister of Justice to request retrials ex officio for convicted prisoners ▲the state’s consideration of special support such as compensation for victims ▲and special exceptions for the committee to request a missing person declaration from the court for victims who disappeared.
