[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Juhyung] A video capturing an elderly Australian grandmother chasing and wrestling with a burly male thief who stole her bag has attracted attention.

According to local Australian broadcasts such as '7 News' on the 25th (local time), a thief appeared at a pub in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, on the afternoon of the 19th of last month and grabbed the bag of a grandmother enjoying a birthday party before running away.

The thief fled at a fast pace but was caught by the grandmother who chased him barefoot.

Afterwards, the grandmother engaged in a fierce struggle with the male thief. CCTV footage capturing the incident shows the grandmother first grabbing the back collar of the thief’s T-shirt, then applying a so-called 'headlock' by choking his neck, and finally throwing him to the ground.

The thief lying on the ground tried to push away the grandmother who was on top of him and escape, but the grandmother retrieved the handbag from the thief’s hand. The thief attempted to snatch the bag again but eventually realized he was outmatched and fled.

The grandmother even showed 'composure' by throwing a slipper that came off during the struggle at the thief. Afterwards, she picked up her bag and returned to the birthday party.

It was reported that the grandmother suffered a cracked rib and bruises on various parts of her body due to the struggle.

The grandmother recounted the situation, saying, "When the thief ran away with my bag, I immediately rushed at him without thinking."

The police, who responded to the report, tracked down and arrested the thief based on the CCTV footage and promptly charged him.

Meanwhile, as the video spread on social media, YouTube, and online communities, Australian netizens expressed astonishment. They commented, "Amazing," "Hard to believe," and "She’s like a heroic grandmother."
