[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] The Jeollanam-do Party Committee of the Democratic Party of Korea made a disqualification decision after a thorough review of the candidates for the Suncheon 1st electoral district provincial council by-election held the day before.
Regarding this, Shin Min-ho, Kim Jeong-hee, and Oh Ha-geun, Jeollanam-do council members and co-chairmen of the Fair Election Management Committee of the Democratic Party of Korea’s Suncheon, Gwangyang, Gokseong, and Gurye (Gap) Regional Committee, issued a statement on the 26th, saying, “It is a fortunate decision reflecting the regional committee’s intention to eradicate old-fashioned politics such as vote-buying and start new politics.”
They explained the situation, saying, “There have been multiple allegations of money politics surrounding the by-election,” and “We have repeatedly suggested to the Jeollanam-do Party Committee the risks of money politics, and the media has begun to report on this in detail, leading to the formation of an internal fact-finding special committee.”
The co-chairmen said, “We sincerely apologize for causing concern to the party members and citizens of Suncheon,” and accepted that “It is a just outcome that the movement to revert to old politics such as money politics has been blocked and a new start can be made.”
They urged, “For the establishment of a new political culture, we ask party members and citizens to remain vigilant and deliver a stern judgment with a sharp disciplinary hand.”
