The First Electric Vehicle Model Surpassing Pre-Order Numbers of Internal Combustion Cars
[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] Hyundai Motor Company's first dedicated electric vehicle, the Ioniq 5, has recorded the highest-ever number of pre-orders on its first day. With this, the Ioniq 5 has become the domestic car model with the highest number of pre-orders among all completed vehicles in Korea, and it is also the first electric vehicle to surpass the pre-order numbers of internal combustion engine vehicles.
Hyundai Motor announced on the 26th that as a result of conducting pre-orders for the Ioniq 5 nationwide through dealerships starting on the 25th, the number of contracts on the first day reached 23,760 units.
This far exceeds the previous Hyundai record for the highest number of first-day pre-orders of 17,294 units held by the 6th generation Grandeur facelift (partial change) model. It also surpassed the record of 23,306 units held by Kia's 4th generation Carnival for first-day pre-orders.
Accordingly, the Ioniq 5 has become the model with the highest number of pre-orders among all domestic completed vehicle models, including both electric and internal combustion engine vehicles. Considering that the domestic electric vehicle sales share is 2.5%, this is interpreted as a signal for the 'popularization of electric vehicles.'
A Hyundai Motor official explained, "The reason the Ioniq 5 received an explosive response from customers in just one day is because it met customers' demands and expectations for Hyundai's first dedicated electric vehicle, which offers a completely new experience with innovative design and advanced technology."
Positive reviews from foreign media continue. The American automotive magazine Motortrend stated, "Since these are not rendering images or concept car images, there is no need to adjust the screen brightness," and added, "It has a futuristic image, but this is the new Hyundai model you will encounter, and it will open a new era of Hyundai design." The British automotive magazine Autocar also said, "The parametric pixels applied to the headlights and taillights, which have never been seen in existing Hyundai cars, are distinctive, and the clean straight lines are attractive."
The price of the Ioniq 5 revealed by Hyundai Motor is approximately 52 million to 52.5 million KRW for the Exclusive trim and 57 million to 57.5 million KRW for the Prestige trim. Considering the individual consumption tax exemption for electric vehicles (up to 3 million KRW) and the zero-emission vehicle subsidies from the government and local governments (12 million KRW based on Seoul city), the actual vehicle purchase price is reduced to 37 million to 42.5 million KRW. This is similar to the price of mid-to-large sedans like the Grandeur currently sold domestically.
Hyundai Motor offers a benefit to pre-order customers by providing free installation of the customizable interior V2L (Vehicle To Load) feature to 500 people selected by lottery. V2L is a function that supplies general power (220V) outside the vehicle, allowing the use of home appliances and electronic devices without restrictions in various outdoor environments such as outdoor activities or camping sites.
Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor released a TV commercial video on the first day of pre-orders showcasing the new technologies and experiences of the Ioniq 5. The video, themed "A new mobility era full of first experiences," expresses a journey to a new world through a flight concept. It consists of a total of four episodes, with the remaining three to be aired later.
