[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] In Koreatown, Los Angeles (LA), USA, an Asian male presumed to be Korean was assaulted while being subjected to racist remarks, prompting an investigation by the US police. It was reported that the assailants threatened the man by telling him to "go back to China."
According to US media such as CBS on the 24th (local time), the man was attacked by two Hispanic individuals while walking in Koreatown. The victim, known as Danny Kim, stated, "They called me 'ching chong' (a derogatory term mocking Chinese language in English-speaking countries), 'Chinese virus,' and other racial insults, and told me to go back to China."
The racist attack occurred on the 16th on Kenmore Avenue. Mr. Kim sustained injuries including a broken nose and bruises around both eyes due to the assault.
Thanks to Joseph Cha, an acquaintance of Mr. Kim who was nearby, Mr. Kim was able to avoid a more serious crisis. The LA police reportedly received the report through a 911 call.
Although Mr. Kim’s background, such as being a reserve in the Air Force, has been introduced, further details are unknown; however, based on his name, he is presumed to be a Korean American.
US media reported that the Asian American community views this incident as a hate crime. They urged raising awareness about hate crimes targeting Asian Americans.
