[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A furry sheep rescued at an animal shelter in Australia is drawing attention.
On the 24th (local time), US media CNN reported that a sheep with severely matted wool was rescued in Lancefield, north of Melbourne, Australia.
Edgard Mission Sanctuary, an Australian farm animal shelter, rescued a sheep from a nearby forest earlier this month.
Animal shelter staff member Kyle received a call saying, "There is an ownerless sheep in the forest, and it seems strange. You should come quickly." Upon arriving at the scene, Kyle found a sheep wandering alone and recalled, "It was the largest sheep I have ever seen." At the time of rescue, the sheep’s wool was so overgrown and matted that its vision was obscured, and its body was unrecognizable. The wool was contaminated with feces and insects.
The sheep was named "Baarack."
The shelter staff who safely rescued Baarack decided to remove his wool. From Baarack’s body, which barely moved on its own, a staggering 35.4 kg of wool was sheared off. Beneath the enormous fleece, Baarack was severely emaciated and suffering from serious malnutrition. His vision was also impaired due to the wool covering his eyes. While healthy wool helps regulate a sheep’s body temperature, Baarack’s wool had become a life-threatening burden.
Buried in the wool, traces of an ear tag were found on Baarack’s ear, indicating he was once raised on a farm.
Kyle explained, "Wild sheep, the ancestors of domestic sheep, shed their wool naturally, but domestic sheep must have their wool sheared by humans. If wool is not sheared at least once a year, it poses a serious threat to their survival." Sheep bred for wool production have been selectively bred to increase wool yield, so if humans do not shear them, their wool continues to grow indefinitely.
Baarack, who underwent a dramatic transformation, is reported to be regaining strength and adapting well to life at the shelter.
Kyle said, "Baarack is recovering very quickly and is very curious. He is gradually regaining confidence every day."
