[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Ju-hyung] Some ruling party lawmakers have dismissed claims of President Moon Jae-in's 'lame-duck signs,' which have been circulating in political circles, as "merely the media's necessity and wishful thinking." A lame duck refers to a leadership vacuum phenomenon experienced by high-ranking officials nearing the end of their term.

On the 25th, Jeong Cheong-rae, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, wrote on his Facebook, "The word that will frequently appear in the media from now on is lame duck," but he drew a line by saying, "There is no actual lame duck."

He continued, "In conclusion, a presidential approval rating exceeding 40% does not correspond with lame duck," adding, "However, at the point where one year remains in the term, there is only a foolish calf's angry wish that a lame duck should come."

He then emphasized, "I hope President Moon Jae-in will be recorded in history as the first successful president without, or possibly without, a lame duck," and "I want to create a success story for the Moon Jae-in administration and the president."

Jeong reiterated, "There is no lame duck for President Moon Jae-in," and "Lame duck is a naming created by the media and their wishful thinking."

On the same day, Yoon Gun-young, a Democratic Party lawmaker, also criticized on Facebook, saying, "At this point, the opposition party and some media are chanting spells for the lame duck of the Moon Jae-in administration."

Yoon pointed out, "I saw the word 'lame duck' in various newspapers today," and said, "By only focusing on lame duck, they are forcibly creating conflicts between the Blue House and the party that do not even exist."

He added, "The president's approval rating still hovers in the mid-40% range," and questioned, "More than 40% of the people support the president's governance, so is lame duck possible?"

He further criticized, "If a real lame duck comes during the ongoing COVID-19 national crisis, the damage will be borne entirely by the people," and asked, "Who exactly is the lame duck ritual for?"

Yoon emphasized, "Just as a rain ritual is held until it rains, should we hold a ritual until 'lame duck' comes?" and "The Democratic Party will fight against the lame duck ritual until the end of the term for the success of the Moon Jae-in administration."
