Jeonnam Province Forms 'Jachigyeongchal Junbidan'... Accelerating Preparation for the Autonomous Police System

[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province has begun full-scale preparations to ensure that the 'Autonomous Police System,' scheduled for full implementation from July 1, is effective and stable.

On the 25th, the province announced that it has formed the Autonomous Police Preparation Team to start preparations for operating the autonomous police system and is accelerating the formation of the 'Jeonnam Province Autonomous Police Committee,' which will serve as the control tower for the system.

First, the province announced the legislative notice of the 'Ordinance on Jeonnam Province Autonomous Police Affairs and the Organization and Operation of the Autonomous Police Committee,' necessary for the autonomous police system, on the same day. Public opinions will be collected until the 9th of next month.

The ordinance mainly includes ▲the scope of autonomous police affairs ▲methods for appointing autonomous police committee members ▲formation of a working council ▲provisions on disqualification and recusals of committee members, and other systems to enhance the transparency of committee operations.

Once the ordinance is promulgated, the administrative office will be established by April, and the chairman and standing members of the autonomous police committee will be appointed by the end of May to complete the formation.

Afterward, a pilot operation and evaluation will be conducted throughout June to address issues and improvement measures in the system's operation, leading to full-scale implementation in July.

The province plans to focus on providing community-oriented security services tailored to regional characteristics during the preparation process.

Son Jeomsik, Director of the Autonomous Administration Bureau of Jeonnam Province, said, “We will complete thorough preparations to ensure the autonomous police system is successfully established and runs smoothly after full implementation. We will proactively respond to and prevent incidents closely related to residents, such as the recently frequent cases of child abuse, sexual violence, and traffic accidents in school zones, and do our best to ensure the successful implementation of a resident-centered autonomous police system.”
