[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Residents of Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon-do have decided to unite in order to completely cancel the "Donghaean (Shinhanul) to Singapyeong Transmission Line Construction Project."
According to the Hongcheon-gun Prosperity Association on the 25th, the Hongcheon-gun Transmission Tower Opposition Countermeasure Committee held a meeting in the Prosperity Association conference room on the 24th and decided to launch an all-out struggle against the Korea Electric Power Corporation's transmission line construction project.
The meeting was organized by the Prosperity Association recognizing that the transmission line construction is not only an issue for residents along the route but a problem for all residents of Hongcheon-gun.
Hongcheon-gun, the Hongcheon-gun Prosperity Association, and the Transmission Tower Opposition Countermeasure Committee discussed various measures to minimize local damage.
Yong Junsun, co-chairman of the Transmission Tower Opposition Countermeasure Committee, said, "We have been fighting against the Hongcheon transmission towers for the past two years, and to prevent damage to the development of Hongcheon-gun and its residents, we will work together with the Prosperity Association," signaling an all-out battle.
Lee Gyuseol, president of the Hongcheon-gun Prosperity Association, also said, "Let us unite to seek the best possible local development measures through communication between residents and related organizations."
Hongcheon-gun is also preparing countermeasures, demanding the dissolution of the site selection committee and a fundamental re-examination of the route.
Meanwhile, the Donghaean to Singapyeong transmission line construction project involves installing approximately 230 km of transmission lines by June 2025 to transport large-scale power generated in the Donghaean region to the metropolitan area.
The western section of the transmission line route includes Hoengseong and Hongcheon in Gangwon, and Yangpyeong and Gapyeong counties in Gyeonggi Province. From 1996 to 2000, 317 transmission towers were installed along 155 km of lines within Gangwon-do.
As a result, for over 20 years, residents near the transmission towers have continuously filed complaints due to infringement on property rights, environmental destruction, and landscape degradation.
Additionally, during heavy rains, landslides caused by the transmission line construction have led to the loss of farmland and damage to crops.
