[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Chae Hyun-il) has actively launched an advanced childcare project in collaboration with the Childcare Comprehensive Support Center to elevate the quality of Yeongdeungpo’s childcare environment in the new year of 2021, the Year of the Ox.

The district announced plans to operate a variety of well-structured educational, cultural performances, and events this year, encompassing both public childcare service users (infants, toddlers, and parents) and providers (childcare staff).

As a starting point, in early January, the district distributed a basic guidebook for infants and toddlers to adapt to daycare centers titled the 'Smart Daycare Life Project' as a webzine, supporting the operation of local daycare centers.

Additionally, on February 5, a non-face-to-face home childcare program for Lunar New Year was held, titled ‘Traditional Folk Games for Parents and Children Together.’

Folk game kits (including Yutnori, wooden Gonggi, string games, feather Jegi, etc.) were delivered to 70 hopeful infant and toddler families, enabling them to enjoy traditional games at home.

There is also a strong focus on various training programs for childcare service providers. For daycare center directors, personnel and labor management education and financial accounting training are provided; for assistant directors and lead teachers, a mid-level management course titled ‘It’s Okay to Be a First-Time Director’ is offered; and for childcare staff, child abuse prevention education is conducted. These are balanced and implemented throughout the first and second halves of the year.

In particular, the district has introduced financial accounting education for daycare centers for the first time this year, expecting it to contribute to strengthening the capabilities and professionalism of childcare staff.

Last year’s highly rated healing education for childcare teachers will be expanded quarterly, with diversified themes to help teachers relieve stress and recharge.

Moreover, leveraging the advantages of online delivery without restrictions on time, space, or number of participants, various genres such as musicals, puppet shows, magic shows, photo contests, and toy competitions will be diversified during seasonal events like Children’s Day. This will provide high-quality cultural content and experiential learning opportunities to families with infants and toddlers and daycare centers.

Last year, in May, the district held the ‘Stay-at-Home Play Challenge’ event for Family Month, supporting various play activity contents non-face-to-face for families and daycare centers.

Also, in October, following the ‘Hurrah! The Big Turnip Puppet Show by the Turnip Family,’ and in December, the ‘Winterland Magician Magic Show’ were streamed online via the YouTube channel, stimulating and expanding infants’ and toddlers’ imagination through songs and performances, allowing them to enjoy artistic expression and appreciation.

As a result of conducting various cultural events and education online like this, high participation and satisfaction were observed as parents, children, and childcare staff freely accessed programs at their preferred times, marking a successful overcoming of COVID-19.

Yeongdeungpo District Mayor Chae Hyun-il stated, “We will do our best to create an open childcare city, Yeongdeungpo, where families and daycare centers are happy together by implementing high-quality childcare projects suited to the district’s conditions and childcare administration that can respond to the post-COVID-19 era.”
