Temporary Removal of Taegukgi at Southern End of Yeongdong-daero for Early Relocation and Installation... Commemorating the 102nd Anniversary of March 1st Movement
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jeong Soon-gyun) will install a 50m-high flagpole displaying a large Taegeukgi flag measuring 12m wide and 8m tall at the southern end of Hannam Bridge interchange (667 Sinsa-dong) on March 1.
This is the result of the district's effort to expedite completion to address the residents' growing disappointment over the long absence of the large Taegeukgi flag, which had been a representative symbol at the southern end of Yeongdong Bridge.
The restoration cost was fully borne by the private contractor responsible for the removal.
Before selecting the site, the district gathered residents' opinions. In a survey conducted from October 14 to 22 last year with 1,302 residents, 58% (760 people) chose the installation at Hannam Bridge.
The survey asked whether to restore the flag at the southern end of Yeongdong Bridge or relocate it to the southern end of Hannam Bridge.
Meanwhile, the Taegeukgi flag at the southern end of Yeongdong Bridge was temporarily removed in July last year during the government's GTX (Greater Seoul Metropolitan Area Express Train) - A Line (Dongtan to Samsung) project plan change process.
Originally, it was scheduled to be restored in June 2024 after the completion of the GTX-A Line construction.
Jeong Soon-gyun, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, said, "It is a great achievement to be able to return the large Taegeukgi flag to the residents in commemoration of the 102nd anniversary of the March 1st Movement," adding, "Hannam Bridge, which holds symbolic meaning for national economic development, is located on a major road with heavy foot traffic, so many people will be able to see the Taegeukgi and rekindle their patriotism."
