[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chunhan] One in three people who give back-to-school gifts this year choose digital devices, and one in five spend over 1 million won.
A survey on back-to-school gifts was conducted by Auction, operated by eBay Korea, from the 18th to the 22nd, targeting 1,626 visitors. When asked about the back-to-school gifts purchased this year, laptops, PCs, and tablets ranked first at 30%. Shoes and bags (26%), clothing (13%), books (10%), and e-coupons (7%) followed.
The increased use of digital devices, such as online classes becoming routine due to COVID-19, appears to be reflected in this year’s back-to-school gift trends. Last year, shoes and bags (32%) ranked first, followed by laptops, PCs, and tablets (26%), and clothing (16%).
The average spending on back-to-school gifts was 391,635 won, showing a 7% increase compared to last year. Notably, the percentage of respondents who spent over 1 million won on gifts also rose from 16% last year to 19% this year.
Regarding the places where gifts were purchased this year, online malls accounted for the highest at 89%. Other places included department stores (4%), large supermarkets (3%), select shops and road shops (2%), and specialty stores and traditional markets (2%).
