Geumcheon-gu to Launch Ice Pack Recycling Pilot Project Starting March

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yuseong Hoon) will launch a pilot project for ice pack recycling starting in March.

The district has been considering ways to recycle ice packs, as those disposed of in volume-based waste bags and landfilled have become a cause of environmental pollution.

Accordingly, the district has devised a plan to collect single-use ice packs from each neighborhood and enable merchants at Doksan-dong Livestock Market and traditional markets to recycle them.

Ice pack collection boxes have been installed at community service centers (including branch offices) to gather ice packs discarded from households for proper disposal.

The collected ice packs will go through recycling processes such as washing, disinfection, drying, and packaging before being provided to Doksan-dong Livestock Market and traditional markets. Local self-support workers from Geumcheon-gu participate in the recycling process, and to this end, the district signed a business agreement with the Geumcheon Regional Self-Support Center on the 10th.

Recyclable ice packs are clean gel-type products wrapped in plastic. Non-woven fabric packaging or damaged/contaminated ice packs should be disposed of in volume-based waste bags as before. Water-type ice packs can be recycled by separating the water and plastic, with only the plastic being recyclable.

Yuseong Hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “We plan to enhance the value of ice pack recycling, which has been difficult to manage until now, and expand a resource circulation system that preserves a clean environment for future generations. We ask for the active participation of residents to reduce household waste and protect the environment.”
