Fast access from the metropolitan area to downtown, expected reduction in commute time with additional new stations
Improved residential and workplace accessibility for metropolitan residents increases transportation convenience... Generates demand and transportation services in the metropolitan outskirts
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 25th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it has proposed to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport the addition of new stations on the Metropolitan Area Express Railway (GTX) to establish major urban rail transfer hubs for faster access between the metropolitan area and key points and to improve the convenience of public transportation use. The proposed new stations are three locations: Gwanghwamun (City Hall) Station on Line A, Dongdaemun (Dongdaemun History & Culture Park) Station on Line B, and Wangsimni Station on Line C.
The Metropolitan Area Express Railway (GTX) is being developed with the goal of creating a metropolitan express railway network that connects major hub stations within 30 minutes to enhance transportation welfare for metropolitan residents and alleviate chronic traffic congestion. Three lines?A, B, and C?are currently being promoted.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government explained, "Currently, GTX stations are planned to be newly established at Seoul Station, Cheongnyangni Station, and Samseong Station within Seoul. However, according to existing plans, while rapid access to downtown Seoul is possible, there has been insufficient consideration regarding how to reach actual destinations via transfers, which is expected to cause inconvenience for metropolitan area users in the future."
To resolve this, Seoul selected and proposed new stations. It is explained that once additional stations are established, various benefits will arise, including significant reduction in travel time, the creation of a railway network effect, and strengthening of public transportation accessibility through improved access between residential and work areas.
Seoul stated, "The three stations proposed this time are not only connected to the circular Line 2, which passes through major hubs, but also linked with Lines 1, 4, 5, the Bundang Line, and the Gyeongui-Jungang Line, ensuring high connectivity with Seoul’s urban rail system. This also reduces the need for multiple transfers when using GTX, thereby enhancing travel convenience."
Seoul has formally submitted the proposal for additional GTX stations to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and plans to conduct detailed discussions on station installation with related agencies. Furthermore, if necessary, expert consultations and other measures will be pursued to improve citizen convenience and develop the public transportation transfer system.
Hwang Bo-yeon, Director of Urban Transportation at Seoul City, said, “The proposed new GTX stations in downtown Seoul are essential for increasing transportation efficiency and improving user convenience as they connect with major lines such as Subway Line 2. We will strive to establish a convenient transfer system centered on urban rail so that GTX can become a public transportation system serving the entire metropolitan area, allowing metropolitan users to truly feel the convenience.”
