Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Wins Order for 6 Container Ships Worth 570 Billion KRW

[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, the intermediate holding company of Hyundai Heavy Industries Group's shipbuilding division, has secured orders for six vessels worth a total of 570 billion KRW.

Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering announced on the 24th that it recently signed a construction contract for six 45,700-ton container and roll-on/roll-off hybrid vessels (ConRo ships) with a European shipping company.

The ConRo ships ordered this time can carry 3,000 vehicles and 2,000 20-foot containers. They will be built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan and are scheduled to be delivered sequentially to the shipowner starting from the first half of 2023.

ConRo ships are multipurpose cargo vessels capable of loading and unloading self-propelled vehicles such as passenger cars, trucks, and trailers, as well as containers. They feature ship cranes that allow for quick loading and unloading even at ports without loading and unloading facilities. In particular, these ConRo ships are equipped with eco-friendly facilities such as nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction devices and sulfur oxide (SOx) scrubbers to comply with environmental regulations.

A Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering official said, "Our extensive experience in building ConRo ships and our record of delivering high-quality vessels were the driving forces behind this order," adding, "We will strengthen our position in the global market through continuous technological development and quality management."

Since 2010, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard has led the related market by building and delivering 19 ConRo ships, accounting for 40% of the 48 ConRo ships constructed worldwide.
