[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] As the number of households raising pets increases and the pet industry grows, the competition rate for veterinary medicine college admissions this year has risen compared to last year.

According to Jinhaksa on the 24th, the average competition rate for regular admissions to veterinary medicine colleges for the 2021 academic year was 11.02 to 1, up from 10.27 to 1 last year. The overall acceptance cutoff also rose to the top 3.5% level.

Although the total number of regular admission spots for veterinary colleges decreased by 6 compared to last year, the number of applicants for regular admissions actually increased by 83. This is due to the rising preference for the veterinary profession as more households raise pets and the pet industry expands.

The veterinary medicine department with the highest competition rate among all was Konkuk University. In the early admission track, the KU Essay Excellence track had a competition rate of 194.67 to 1. Kyungpook National University’s veterinary medicine department, which conducts an essay-based early admission, had the second highest competition rate at 141.93 to 1. For regular admissions, Jeju University’s veterinary medicine department had a competition rate of 31.75 to 1.

Woo Yeoncheol, head of the Admissions Strategy Research Institute at Jinhaksa, said, "With the growth of the pet industry, interest among examinees has increased, causing admission competition rates to rise, and the admission results also show that the cutoff for veterinary college regular admissions this year has risen to the top 3.5%. The status has risen to a level comparable to the medical, dental, and Korean medicine fields (medical school, dental school, Korean medicine school), which are supported by the top natural science students."
