[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] Samsung Electronics has maintained its throne in the global TV market for 15 consecutive years.
According to industry sources on the 24th, Samsung Electronics ranked first in the global TV market share by value last year with 31.9%, according to market research firm Omdia. Since rising to the top of the global market share (14.6%) in 2006 with the popularity of Bordeaux TV, it has maintained its lead for 15 years.
Samsung Electronics' global TV market share grew from 26.5% in 2017 to 30.9% in 2019, surpassing 30% for two consecutive years. Samsung explained, "Despite the global economic crisis caused by COVID-19 last year, our strategy to focus on QLED (Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode) and large-sized TVs was effective in expanding market dominance."
QLED TVs sold 7.79 million units last year. Since selling 800,000 units in 2017, sales have continuously increased with 2.6 million units in 2018 and 5.32 million units in 2019. Accordingly, the share of QLED in Samsung Electronics' total TV sales revenue rose to 35.5% in 2020. In the global premium TV market, defined as TVs priced over $2,500, Samsung also maintained its lead with a 45.4% share by value. Samsung ranks first in the large-sized TV markets of 75 inches and above and 80 inches and above with shares of 47.0% and 50.8%, respectively.
Leading the Global TV Market with 'Innovative DNA'
Targeting the Market This Year with Neo QLED and Micro LED
Samsung Electronics has led the global TV sector by continuously launching products that change market trends. The Bordeaux TV, shaped like a wine glass and featuring a red hue, set a record of 1 million units sold within six months of its release in 2006. In 2009, Samsung introduced the 'LED TV,' called the 'emergence of a new species' and a 'revolution of light,' for the first time. In 2011, it launched the smart TV with the concept of moving from a 'TV to watch' to a 'TV to use and enjoy.' In 2017, Samsung unveiled the QLED TV, which enhanced picture quality using quantum dot technology. In 2018, it introduced the ultra-high-definition QLED 8K with 32 million pixels, four times more than 4K resolution TVs.
Additionally, in 2015, Samsung released 'The Serif,' developed in collaboration with world-renowned furniture designers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec at the London Design Festival. This product gained recognition as a 'furniture-like TV' through partnerships with design, fashion, and galleries. Lifestyle TVs such as 'The Frame,' optimized for viewing artworks like a picture frame, and 'The Sero,' useful for watching mobile content, have also gained popularity by differentiating not only in function but also in design.
This year, Samsung plans to target the market with 'Neo QLED,' which applies quantum mini LED technology and features improvements in picture quality, design, and sound, as well as 'Micro LED,' a truly self-emissive display that emits both light and color independently.
Han Jong-hee, President of Samsung Electronics' Visual Display Business, said, "The achievement of being number one for 15 consecutive years is thanks to consumers trusting and loving Samsung TVs. Going forward, based on innovative technology, we will reflect the diverse lifestyles of users and create a 'Screen for All' era by increasing eco-friendly products for a sustainable future for all of us."
