Seoul City Selects 26 Outstanding Apartment Complexes, Awards Up to 10 Million Won

Comprehensive Evaluation of Energy Saving and Production, Waste Reduction, and Eco-Friendly Boiler Replacement Rate

Seoul City Selects 26 Outstanding Apartment Complexes, Awards Up to 10 Million Won

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 24th that it will hold the '2021 Eco-friendly Practice Excellent Apartment Contest,' awarding a total incentive of 100 million KRW to apartments excelling in energy saving, proper resource recycling, and waste reduction activities. The purpose is to reduce greenhouse gases in multi-family housing through electricity and water saving, recycling separation, and renewable energy production such as veranda mini solar power.

All apartment complexes subject to mandatory management within Seoul are eligible to participate in this contest. The evaluation period covers energy saving and eco-friendly activities from January to August 2021. During this period, residents who actively participate in carbon neutrality through six evaluation categories?▲waste reduction ▲energy production ▲energy efficiency ▲Eco Mileage subscription ▲energy saving rate ▲excellent saving practice?will be assessed by Seoul City to select outstanding apartment complexes.

The evaluation targets twice the number of apartments with excellent energy saving performance (52 apartments). Seoul Energy Designers will conduct on-site inspections to verify residents' practice activities and cases. Finally, a panel of internal and external experts related to energy and multi-family housing will comprehensively evaluate the practice activities (quantitative evaluation) and practice cases (qualitative evaluation), with the final decision announced in December.

The grand prize awards 10 million KRW each to 2 complexes, the top excellence awards 4 to 5 million KRW each to 10 complexes, and excellence awards 2 to 3 million KRW each to 14 complexes, totaling incentives of 100 million KRW for 26 complexes. Participation in the contest is automatic upon registering as a member of the multi-family housing management office on the Seoul Eco Mileage website by August.

Kim Yeon-ji, Director of the Environmental Citizen Cooperation Division of Seoul City, said, “Although energy consumption increased last year due to more time spent at home because of COVID-19, many apartments showed excellent energy saving results thanks to the efforts of residents and management offices participating in the ‘Apartment Saving Contest.’ This year, we will select apartments practicing eco-friendly activities such as waste reduction as well as energy saving, share exemplary practice cases, and strive to spread and implement them.”
