[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Kim Tae-nyeon, the floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated on the 23rd that the opposition party is abusing the vaccine safety controversy as a tool for political strife, and if there are doubts about safety, the political circle should take the lead first.

At the floor strategy meeting held at the National Assembly that morning, Floor Leader Kim said, “I express regret over the opposition party’s behavior of abusing even the vaccination order, which should be decided based on medical and scientific judgment, as a means of political strife.”

He emphasized, “If there are doubts about vaccine safety, the political circle should take the lead starting with myself,” and “Democratic Party lawmakers have pledged to get vaccinated first if necessary.”

Addressing the opposition party, he pointed out, “The consent rate for vaccines is high, with 94% of the first-dose recipients responding that they will get vaccinated,” and “It has been announced that vaccinations will only be conducted with vaccines whose safety and efficacy have been proven. All that remains is to administer vaccines fairly and safely according to the plan. The continuous politicization and obstruction of quarantine measures must stop.”

Regarding the illegal surveillance activities of the Lee Myung-bak administration’s National Intelligence Service, Floor Leader Kim demanded an explanation from Park Hyung-joon, the People Power Party’s preliminary candidate for Busan mayor. Park served as the Senior Secretary for Political Affairs at the Blue House at the time. Kim said, “Yesterday, at the Intelligence Committee meeting, traces were found showing that surveillance reports produced by the National Intelligence Service during the Lee Myung-bak government were distributed to the Office of the Senior Secretary for Civil Affairs, the Office of the Senior Secretary for Political Affairs, and the Prime Minister’s Office,” adding, “Since the Office of the Senior Secretary for Political Affairs was confirmed as a distribution channel for the surveillance documents, I demand that Candidate Park clearly explain the role and content of the surveillance documents he received.”

He continued, “During the Lee Myung-bak administration, Ven. Myeongjin, who was a victim of illegal civilian surveillance, claimed that Candidate Park, while serving as Senior Secretary for Political Affairs, discussed with the Jogye Order’s General Secretary the revocation of his monk status,” and criticized, “The election must not become a shield to evade illegal surveillance. The People Power Party must confess the truth and take the lead in uncovering it.”

He added, “These are just the tip of the iceberg among the crimes committed by the Lee Myung-bak Blue House, and how serious it is remains unknown at this point,” and “It is the duty of the National Assembly to reveal everything in detail. The Democratic Party will thoroughly investigate the illegal surveillance allegations, focusing on the Intelligence Committee.”
