[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 23rd that it will begin accepting applications for new projects under the "2021 Industrial Specialized Workforce AI Capacity Building" program, which supports the cultivation of AI convergence talent across various industrial sectors, starting from the 24th.
The Industrial Specialized Workforce AI Capacity Building project is one of the initiatives under the Korean New Deal aimed at training 100,000 core AI and software talents. It targets workers currently employed in the industry, providing AI convergence education to promote digital transformation in industrial sites and maximize the outcomes of the Digital New Deal.
This project, which began last year as a supplementary budget initiative supporting six industrial sectors, will expand this year with an additional 6 new industrial sectors funded with 2.9 billion KRW, bringing the total budget to 5.8 billion KRW. Through a public contest and evaluation, six industrial sectors and executing institutions will be selected. The government plans to nurture 19,500 AI convergence talents by 2025 to accelerate the fusion of AI with various industrial fields.
Executing institutions can apply as a consortium of organizations capable of operating AI education programs, including relevant industry-related associations or groups, to ensure a balanced combination of existing industry expertise and AI education capabilities.
Kim Jeong-sam, Director of Software Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, "We will actively support the cultivation of field-customized AI convergence talents that reflect the status and characteristics of each industrial sector to accelerate AI convergence and promote AI adoption in the industry."
