[Asia Economy Reporter Seolgina Jo] The Personal Information Protection Commission announced on the 23rd that it plans to establish and operate an 'Artificial Intelligence (AI) Personal Information Infringement Prevention Support System' to evaluate whether only the minimum necessary personal information is collected legally and justifiably according to laws and regulations.
Since 2016, the Personal Information Commission has been supporting the appropriateness of personal information processing by conducting preliminary evaluations of personal information infringement factors for legislative proposals and amendments promoted by central administrative agencies, which are statutory obligations.
However, there have been continuous criticisms that the vast majority of laws, including member-proposed legislation, existing laws, and ordinances, are not subject to mandatory personal information infringement evaluations, leaving them as blind spots in personal information protection.
In the future, by utilizing the AI Personal Information Infringement Prevention Support System, it will be possible to evaluate personal information infringement factors for member-proposed bills, existing laws, and ordinances without increasing personnel. The Commission emphasized that this will also enable improvements, thereby further strengthening the protection of citizens' personal information.
