[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Asiana Airlines has decided to suspend the operation of nine aircraft equipped with the same series of engines as the Boeing 777 whose engine failed during a flight in the United States.
According to industry sources on the 22nd, Asiana Airlines suspended the operation of nine Boeing 777 aircraft equipped with PW4000 series engines, the same type as the engine involved in the accident, in the afternoon. Two of these had already been grounded due to COVID-19.
According to foreign media, Boeing has advised airlines to suspend operations of Boeing 777 models equipped with the engine involved in the accident. United Airlines has suspended operations of 24 Boeing 777 aircraft, and Japanese authorities have ordered Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways to halt operations of the affected aircraft. It is reported that the Korean government is also reviewing the situation in coordination with U.S. authorities. According to industry sources, Korean Air operates 54 Boeing 777 aircraft, of which 16 are equipped with PW4000 series engines. Jin Air is reported to have four aircraft with PW4000 series engines.
