[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft (MS), recently stated that the large-scale power outage in Texas was not at all caused by green energy, contrary to some claims.

On the 21st, Gates appeared on Fox News Sunday and mentioned the recent Texas power outage during an interview focused on green energy. Texas Governor Greg Abbott had previously pointed to the failure of green energy policies, especially wind energy, as the cause of the large-scale power outage in Texas.

Gates said that Governor Abbott's claim was completely wrong and that the power outage occurred because the Texas power system could not withstand the situation. Last week, severe cold weather caused wind turbines to freeze, disrupting power generation from wind energy in Texas. However, not only wind but also natural gas production was affected as pipes froze, causing power generation difficulties.

Gates noted that wind turbines were only part of the problem and mentioned that wind turbines are also used in Alaska and North Dakota, stating that it is possible to make wind turbines capable of withstanding extreme cold.

Gates has been emphasizing the use of green energy, recently publishing a book titled "How to Avoid a Climate Disaster." In the book, he argues that to avoid disasters caused by climate change, the current 5.1 billion tons of carbon emissions must be reduced to zero within the next 30 years.

Gates warned that if carbon emissions are not reduced to zero by 2050, terrible consequences will follow. He said equatorial regions will become uninhabitable, and there will be migration on a scale ten times greater than the number of refugees during the Syrian civil war. Gates also stated that in summer, people will not be able to go outside, making farming impossible and causing a sharp decline in production. Furthermore, he said the number of lives lost due to global warming will be more severe than the worst COVID-19 situation.

Regarding claims that the 2050 target for achieving zero carbon emissions is too late and should be reset to 2030, Gates pointed out that this is unrealistic. He said it will take at least 30 years to achieve zero carbon emissions, making the 2030 target impractical.

Gates emphasized the need for government transition to green energy and said that the technology sector would see a significant increase in jobs as a result.
