At Nambu University Swimming Pool... Four Events Including Swimming, Diving, and Artistic Swimming
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 22nd that the Gwangju Swimming Championships and Masters Swimming Competition, promoted as a legacy project of the 2019 Gwangju World Swimming Championships, will be held in July.
The competition schedule was decided this year after Gwangju City submitted an application to the Korea Swimming Federation earlier this year, expressing the hope that a nationwide swimming competition would be held in July, the month when the 2019 World Swimming Championships took place, to commemorate the event. On the 19th, the Korea Swimming Federation Board of Directors meeting accepted Gwangju City's proposal, finalizing this year's schedule.
The venue for the competition was decided to be the Nambu University Swimming Pool, where the swimming events of the 2015 Summer Universiade and the 2019 World Swimming Championships were held, under the supervision of the Korea Swimming Federation.
The events include four categories: swimming, water polo, diving, and artistic swimming, with participants ranging from kindergarten and elementary school students to the general public.
The Gwangju Swimming Championships and Masters Swimming Competition were promoted in accordance with the decision of the International Event Review Committee at the time of the international event approval for the 2019 World Swimming Championships (October 2012), which stipulated that domestic competitions must be held at least once a year continuously.
In addition, Gwangju City is also promoting the construction of the Korea Swimming Promotion Center (total project cost of 37 billion KRW), which will include an international sports memorial exhibition hall and swimming pools, as part of the legacy project of the 2019 Gwangju World Swimming Championships, scheduled for completion in 2024.
Kim Jun-young, Director of the Culture, Tourism and Sports Office of Gwangju City, said, “We hope that the Gwangju Swimming Championships held this July will be an opportunity to once again experience the strength of citizens who have overcome the difficult times of COVID-19,” and added, “We will do our best to strictly comply with quarantine rules so that participating athletes can perform at their best with peace of mind.”
