Hyundai Mobis Develops World's First HLED... "Simultaneous Function of Rear and Stop Lights" Hyundai Mobis Develops World's First Automotive 'HLED'

[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Hyundai Mobis has succeeded in developing the world's first vehicle 'HLED' that bends flexibly like a thin film. HLED is expected to be applied to vehicle rear lamps, enabling various rear design implementations.

Hyundai Mobis announced on the 21st that after about two years of research, it developed an HLED with an LED surface thickness of 5.5 mm, which is very thin and can simultaneously function as a stop lamp and rear lamp.

Hyundai Mobis explained that the name HLED was given to this technology to represent High Performance, High Definition, and Homogeneous.

According to safety regulations, the stop lamp must be brighter than the rear lamp, so most vehicles currently sold typically operate the rear lamp and stop lamp separately through different light sources and mechanisms.

However, HLED can implement both rear and stop lamps by adjusting the light (light source) through electrical signals from a single LED. This technology uses micro LED chips with low heat generation and high energy efficiency, allowing simultaneous control of the LED light for rear and stop lamps via electrical signals.

By utilizing HLED technology, it is possible to create sophisticated and unique lamp designs by overlapping thin lines, and vivid animation effects can also be applied.

Moreover, even when bent, it emits bright and uniform light and can send light simultaneously in five directions including front and side, enhancing visibility for drivers approaching from rear sides.

In addition, by eliminating all internal parts previously included in rear lamps, weight reduction and miniaturization have become possible. As a result, the volume has been reduced by nearly 40%, allowing for increased trunk loading capacity.

Hyundai Mobis has passed European (ECE) and American (SAE) lamp regulations and reliability tests related to rear and stop lamps, and plans to accelerate its global vehicle market approach by actively reflecting consumer demands for lamp design based on HLED technology.

Oh Hong-seop, Executive Director of Hyundai Mobis Lamp BU, said, "Vehicle rear lamps are components where consumers have very high standards not only for function but also for aesthetics," adding, "We will accelerate technology development to introduce lamp technology tailored for future vehicles."
