A 20-year-old unmarried father who assaulted a newborn, causing death, has been brought to trial.
[Asia Economy Reporter Hanah Na] A 20-year-old unmarried father has been brought to trial for assaulting and causing the death of his newborn baby who was less than a month old.
The police announced on the 20th that they had sent A (20) to the prosecution with a request for detention and indictment on charges including child abuse resulting in death.
A is accused of striking the head of his 29-day-old son with a ringed hand at his residence in Suwon city on the 2nd of last month, causing the child's death.
At that time, A's son was taken to the hospital emergency room but ultimately died from subdural hemorrhage (brain hemorrhage).
Initially, in the police statement, A denied the charges, claiming that "a mobile fell and the child was injured." However, after police suspicion and persistent questioning, he confessed to the crime, saying, "The child kept crying and I got annoyed, so I hit his head."
According to the police investigation, the deceased newborn was not even registered at birth, making him an unregistered child who did not legally exist on paper. It was also reported that A had been raising the child alone after the child's mother refused to take care of him.
After detaining A, the police conducted further investigations into the cause of death of the newborn and discovered additional signs of abuse, adding charges such as neglect before sending the case to the prosecution.
The prosecution indicted A on the 29th of last month, and the first trial is scheduled for next week.
