Emart Takes Steps to Stabilize Prices of Ogok and Bureom Ahead of Jeongwol Daeboreum

[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Emart will stabilize the prices of five-grain rice and nuts ahead of Jeongwol Daeboreum on the 26th.

Emart announced on the 21st that it will hold a "Jeongwol Daeboreum Celebration" event offering up to 28% discounts on a total of 33 products including glutinous rice, seoritae black beans, red beans, glutinous millet rice, cha job millet, glutinous sorghum rice, peanuts, walnuts, and dried vegetables until the 26th, the day of Jeongwol Daeboreum.

The "soft glutinous five-grain rice (600g) matured for 96 hours" will be offered at 5,584 won with a 20% discount when using the Shinsegae Point Card. "Domestic nuts peanuts (250g)" and "domestic nuts walnuts (120g)" will be sold at 5,504 won and 4,784 won respectively with a 20% discount when using the point card.

Additional coupon discounts will also be provided to Emart's "Health Rice Club" customers. The Health Rice Club, launched offline by Emart in November last year, offers discount coupons on various grain-related items each month. Customers can receive coupons by registering for the club through the Emart application without any separate procedures.

Until the 28th, customers purchasing nutritious grains such as glutinous millet rice, seoritae black beans, brown rice, and red beans through the Health Rice Club can receive a 15% discount coupon. Additionally, first-time registrants to the Health Rice Club will receive a 10% discount coupon applicable to all grain products (coupons cannot be combined, some products excluded).

Emart stated that this discount event was launched due to the recent sharp rise in grain and nut prices. An Emart official said, "For this year's Jeongwol Daeboreum, demand for related products is expected to increase compared to previous years due to the rise of 'home meal' trends and the spread of 'health wish' trends. We planned this discount event so that many customers can quietly wish for health with their families during Jeongwol Daeboreum."

According to Agricultural Product Distribution Information, as of the 18th, the wholesale price of glutinous rice (top grade, 40kg) was 131,800 won, about 20% higher than the same period last year. Domestic peanuts (top grade, 30kg), which recorded high prices last year, were priced at 407,000 won, a 6% increase, but about 38% higher than the average year. The wholesale price of red beans (top grade, 40kg) also rose by approximately 42%.

Emart plans to minimize price increases through bulk purchasing and prior planning, selling five-grain rice, nuts, and dried vegetables at prices 15-20% lower than market prices. In particular, during this event period, "domestic nuts peanuts (250g)" can be purchased for 5,504 won with Shinsegae Point accumulation. This is about 37.5% cheaper than last year's Jeongwol Daeboreum selling price (8,800 won). An Emart official explained, "For domestic peanuts, we started prior planning from November last year and purchased about 4.2 tons in bulk, approximately 2.8 times more than last year's Jeongwol Daeboreum event volume, lowering prices by more than 30% compared to last year."

Meanwhile, Emart will hold an "untact (contactless) wish-making" event through the Emart app for the first time this year. Usually, during the Jeongwol Daeboreum event period, Emart sets up a "daljip" (moon house) at special event sites where customers can write and attach their wishes on paper, but this year, due to COVID-19, it has been replaced with an untact wish-making event. Emart announced that until the 26th, customers who leave a comment with their wish for the year on the "Jeongwol Daeboreum Wish Writing" event page in the Emart app will be entered into a draw to win Emart gift certificates worth 5,000 won (300 winners) and Starbucks Americano (Tall size, 300 winners), totaling 600 winners.

Kim Won-kyung, Emart's grain buyer, said, "This year's Jeongwol Daeboreum is expected to see increased demand as the home meal trend spreads and interest in health rises, with families quietly celebrating Jeongwol Daeboreum at home. We planned this event to allow customers to celebrate Jeongwol Daeboreum at reasonable prices through discounts on grains and nuts, which have recently seen sharp price increases."
