MagnaChip Semiconductor (“MagnaChip”) (CEO Youngjoon Kim, NYSE: MX) announced that it has officially started mass production following the successful launch of MagnaChip's first 120Hz high-frame OLED display driver IC (DDIC) used in QHD flexible displays.
Frame rate refers to the number of images displayed on the screen per second, and a higher frame rate results in better image quality. MagnaChip's OLED DDIC product supports a high frame rate of 120Hz for QHD displays, optimized for 5G smartphone devices.
This product is designed for screens with a resolution of 1440x3360 and is being applied to high-end 5G smartphones from global manufacturers. Based on highly refined high-frame rate technology and the most advanced 28nm process in the pure-play foundry industry, MagnaChip is securing a leading position in the premium 5G smartphone market.
The 5G market is rapidly growing as global smartphone manufacturers continuously release new 5G smartphones. According to market research firm Omdia, 5G smartphone shipments reached 220 million units in 2020 and are expected to increase fivefold to 1.15 billion units by 2023, accounting for approximately 80% of total smartphone shipments.
Youngjoon Kim, Vice Chairman and CEO of MagnaChip, stated, “With the mass production of the new product, customer trust in MagnaChip’s technology and products has been further strengthened,” adding, “MagnaChip will build a technical foundation for design changes and expand new opportunities in the foldable and 5G smartphone sectors.”
