"Toss Releases Self-Produced Documentary Capturing South Korea's Fintech Journey"

[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Viva Republica, the operator of the mobile financial platform Toss, announced on the 19th that it has released an original documentary titled "Fintech, Beyond Convenience."

The documentary, released on Toss's official YouTube channel, captures about 50 minutes of the Toss team's relentless challenges that opened the door to South Korea's fintech industry. It deeply introduces not only the journey from Toss's inception to becoming a fintech unicorn but also the vision for future financial services.

The documentary begins with the story of how Toss did not give up despite the suspension of its pilot service and, after relentless efforts, officially launched its simple remittance service in 2015. It includes episodes such as writing hundreds of letters by hand to bank officials from a small officetel and a scene where CEO Seung-geun Lee, attending a briefing at the Blue House as a young entrepreneur, appeals to "help fintech industry emerge in Korea."

Following the simple remittance service, the documentary vividly portrays the process of Toss expanding its scope as a financial platform by offering various services such as loans, insurance, and investments through interviews with 17 Toss members. Noteworthy are the background of launching the industry's first free credit inquiry service in 2017 and the behind-the-scenes story of developing and launching disaster relief fund application and inquiry services within days last year. CEOs of four affiliates?Toss Insurance, Toss Securities, Toss Payments, and the soon-to-be-launched Toss Innovation Preparation Corporation (tentatively named Toss Bank)?also expressed their ambitions to innovate each financial sector more easily and conveniently.

CEO Seung-geun Lee: "Captured the Time of Intense Reflection and Aspiration"

The documentary candidly depicts Toss's corporate culture and working style based on autonomy and responsibility. The camera captured members constantly debating to present even simpler financial services, including an atmosphere where employees freely voice opposing opinions during weekly meetings attended by all staff. Except for external interviews, all filming took place within Toss's internal office spaces.

Several global fintech figures participated in the documentary, including Kim Han-jun, CEO of Altos Ventures, and Partner Chae Dae-kwon of Bond Capital, who have observed Toss's growth as early investors; Sue Kelsy, Mastercard Global Lead; and Peter Sanborn, PayPal VP, sharing insights about Toss and the fintech industry. Additionally, leading domestic innovators such as Bong-jin Kim, Chairman of Woowa Brothers; Hee-seung Hwang, CEO of Job Planet; Sung-woo Ahn, CEO of Zigbang; as well as Shin Woo-seok, Partner at Bain & Company, and Jung-wook Lim, CEO of TBT, shared insights on social changes brought by new technologies.

Seung-geun Lee, CEO of Toss, said, "I hope the documentary conveys the time the Toss team has intensely reflected and aspired to provide customers with simple services," adding, "We aim to build understanding and trust in Toss, which will continue to create new finance by communicating with customers in various ways."

This video was planned and produced under the supervision of the Toss Communications Team's video division and completed through collaboration with external professional staff across filming, editing, art, and music fields.
