An 80-Year-Old Left His Mother's Body on the Rooftop for Over 30 Years... "Because I Loved Her So Much"

[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] An octogenarian who left his mother's corpse on the rooftop of a villa for over 30 years has admitted to the charges at the police station.

According to the police on the 18th, the Dongdaemun Police Station in Seoul is investigating an 80-year-old man, Mr. A, who is suspected of abandoning a female corpse found on the rooftop of a villa in Jegi-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, on the 10th.

During the police investigation, Mr. A reportedly stated that he kept the corpse on the villa rooftop out of love and care for his mother. He is the father of the villa owner and resides in this villa.

On the afternoon of the 10th, the police discovered a mummified female corpse on the rooftop of a villa in Jegi-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, and initiated an internal investigation. A cleaning company employee reported it to the police, and at the time of discovery, the corpse was reportedly wrapped in cloth and placed inside a rubber container.

The police are reviewing whether charges of corpse abandonment can be applied, as Mr. A did not hold a funeral for his mother and kept the body on the building's rooftop. However, since the statute of limitations for corpse abandonment is seven years, it is expected that even if charges are applied, actual punishment may not be imposed.

The police have requested DNA testing from the National Forensic Service to confirm the biological relationship between the corpse and Mr. A and are currently awaiting the results.
