Dongjak-gu, 2020 Republic of Korea Public Design Awards Excellence Prize Winner

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Lee Chang-woo) announced on the 17th that it received the Excellence Award in the non-competition category 'Improvement of Public Design Administrative Services' at the '2020 Korea Public Design Awards' hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and organized by the Korea Craft & Design Cultural Promotion Agency.

The award is held annually to discover exemplary cases of public design, present desirable standards for public design, and lay the foundation for public design.

This contest was held in three categories targeting metropolitan and basic local governments nationwide: ▲Project category ▲Academic category ▲Non-competition category (theme: cases of improving public design administrative services).

The non-competition category was newly established last year to actively discover excellent public design cases that are difficult to select through open competition, and a theme is selected each year.

For professionalism and fairness, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Design Cultural Promotion Agency conduct case investigations, and the judging is carried out by a panel of five experts in public design-related fields (design, art, urban planning, architectural design, landscape design).

This year's non-competition category theme was cases of improving public design administrative services, comprehensively evaluating institutional improvements such as public design promotion plans and ordinance revisions, and improvement cases based on them.

Reflecting the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's integrated ordinance proposal, Dongjak-gu enacted the first ordinance in the nation on public design promotion in July last year, receiving excellent evaluations in administrative service improvements such as establishing basic plans for public design promotion and preparing guidelines.

Also, in August last year, the Public Design Promotion Committee was formed to establish an administrative foundation for the introduction of public design.

Dongjak-gu held a design contest for the district entrance gate, improved design by promoting a contest for temporary construction fences, and led public design projects that residents can feel through the development of public visual media design.

In addition, a consulting system called the Public Design Clinic was introduced on a trial basis.

This year, the district plans to actively promote projects in line with the five-year public design plan, including ▲Symbolic Space Design Project ▲Our Neighborhood Flower Road Project ▲Dorimcheon River Landmark Project.

Lee Chang-woo, Mayor of Dongjak-gu, said, "This evaluation is the result of efforts to establish the district's identity through consistent design policy formulation," adding, "We will continue to design local assets attractively, improve facilities that impair urban aesthetics, and create a safe and dignified urban environment."

Meanwhile, the awards ceremony will be held on March 25 at Culture Station Seoul 284ROT (former Seoul Station), and the selected winning works will be introduced through an online exhibition for two weeks starting from the day of the ceremony.
