Fruits of the 'Future Technology Expert Training Program' for Digital Transformation (DX)
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] A strong wave of digital transformation (DX) is sweeping through shipbuilding companies, traditionally perceived as manufacturers. They are embarking on innovations that address various management activities within shipyards using digital-based technologies.
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) announced on the 17th that it recently held the graduation ceremony and presentation for the first cohort of the 'Future Technology Expert Training Program' at its Geoje Okpo Shipyard. This training program, launched in September last year to integrate the shipbuilding industry with future technologies, has borne its first fruits.
The graduation ceremony was attended by DSME President Lee Sung-geun, Bae Doo-hwan, Director of the KAIST Software Education Center, executives of the Future Technology Promotion Council, mentor professors from KAIST, and the program graduates.
The training program was organized into 10 project teams considering the functions of the shipbuilding industry. Each team selected practical tasks applicable to improving productivity and reducing costs, and under the mentoring of KAIST professors, they analyzed problems and sought solutions over approximately five months. By integrating digital technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things, they reached final deliverables applicable to actual work.
Based on the experience gained from this training program, DSME plans to continuously promote digital transformation of its core operations, preparing for management innovation and future technologies.
In particular, to spread awareness and strengthen execution of digital transformation, the company intends to expand educational opportunities to all employees and devote efforts to fostering an overall digital culture and building a supportive environment.
Lee Sung-geun, President of Daewoo Shipbuilding, stated, "In the rapidly changing global market, survival is difficult without the adoption of future technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and contactless technologies. I hope the 40 experts graduating today will take the lead in the company's digital transformation."
