[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] On the 15th, ruling party members of the National Assembly from Goyang City, Gyeonggi Province, and Mayor Lee Jae-jun of Goyang City held a party-government council meeting at KINTEX to discuss the medium- to long-term improvement of the transportation system in the Goyang area.
According to Goyang City on the 16th, participants at the party-government council agreed on the necessity of a regional transportation network plan that links the national railway network and road network.
They also shared opinions on concurrently implementing plans for road construction and maintenance and the establishment and improvement of the regional transportation network in accordance with the city's basic urban plan.
There was also a claim that it is necessary to introduce new transportation modes such as trams and BRT tailored to the environment of each region, and regional transportation networks by zone, to efficiently connect the existing metropolitan transportation network and regional transportation network, expand intercity mobility, and resolve traffic congestion in transportation-disadvantaged areas.
Mayor Lee Jae-jun stated, "To meet the era of carbon neutrality, the construction of public transportation infrastructure such as trams, as well as improvements to bicycle means and pedestrian environments, must be promptly promoted," and requested government-level support including revisions to related laws and preliminary feasibility guidelines for the introduction of eco-friendly transportation modes.
Earlier, in relation to this, on the 2nd, the city jointly submitted a proposal to Minister Byeon Chang-heum of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport along with 10 local governments including Seongnam, Suwon, Daegu Metropolitan City, and Ulsan Metropolitan City to facilitate the smooth promotion of the tram project.
Under the Road Traffic Act, trams are only allowed to operate on exclusive lanes, which lowers economic feasibility (B/C), so a revision of the Road Traffic Act was requested to allow trams to operate on mixed lanes.
National Assembly members attending the party-government council agreed with this and decided to request a legal amendment.
In addition, there were opinions on measures such as creating transfer centers at regional hubs directly connected to Jayuro to disperse and resolve traffic congestion, reviewing the implementation of a public bus system, and early promotion of deep underground roads through special legislation.
The party-government council decided to consider research projects through specialized institutions such as the Korea Transport Institute regarding the discussed transportation system improvements.
Meanwhile, the party-government council was attended by Democratic Party members of the National Assembly Han Jun-ho (Eul), Hong Jeong-min (Byeong), and Lee Yong-woo (Jeong).
