[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Samsung Heavy Industries is increasing its dominance in the eco-friendly ship market by securing a contract to build LNG-fueled container ships.
Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 15th that it had received an order from an Asian shipowner for five ultra-large 15,000 TEU LNG-fueled container ships worth a total of 781.2 billion KRW. These vessels are scheduled to be delivered sequentially by July 2023.
The ships ordered this time are eco-friendly vessels that use LNG, a clean energy source, as the main fuel to comply with regulations on ship air pollutant emissions such as sulfur oxides and carbon dioxide.
Additionally, the vessels will be equipped with various energy-saving devices developed by Samsung Heavy Industries and the smart ship solution SVESSEL, which is expected to further enhance operational efficiency.
Samsung Heavy Industries has been recognized for its eco-friendly shipbuilding technology by securing a total of 22 LNG-fueled vessels in the crude oil carrier market, including shuttle tankers, S-MAX, and VLCC, achieving an overwhelming market share of 73%. Building on this, the company has successfully expanded its market participation by securing a large-scale LNG-fueled container ship contract this time. This is why further expansion of eco-friendly ship orders is anticipated.
A Samsung Heavy Industries official stated, "We expect an increase in orders for eco-friendly and high-efficiency container ships this year, mainly focusing on replacing aging vessels," adding, "We will proactively develop customized products based on differentiated eco-friendly technologies to further expand our market dominance."
Meanwhile, Samsung Heavy Industries has recorded orders for a total of 10 vessels worth 1.3 billion USD, including one LNG carrier and nine container ships (five of which are LNG-fueled), achieving 17% of this year’s order target of 7.8 billion USD.
