[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon has been selected as a special drone deregulation zone.

According to Daejeon City on the 12th, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport recently finalized Daejeon as a special drone deregulation zone (hereafter referred to as the drone special zone).

With the designation of the drone special zone, Daejeon will be temporarily exempt from drone-related regulations such as flight permits, certification, and safety evaluations.

Through this, drone-related companies are expected to have greater freedom to demonstrate prototypes and conduct activities within the drone special zone and gain advantageous positions when participating in Ministry of Land projects.

The drone industry is considered one of the future new industries, and Daejeon is the region with the highest concentration of drone-related companies and research institutions.

The city anticipates that with the designation of the drone special zone, drone service demonstrations will become possible along the three major rivers in Seo-gu, Yuseong-gu, and Daedeok-gu.

In particular, the city will also undertake the establishment of drone operation infrastructure, the construction of a drone service verification system, and the creation of a drone service demonstration platform to expand drone distribution.

Additionally, based on the existing drone park airspace, four major airspaces planned along the three major rivers have been designated as special zones: the 1st airspace (Munji, Jeonmin-dong) for smart drone fields; the 2nd airspace (Daedeok Industrial Complex) for environment and disaster fields; the 3rd airspace (Hanbat Arboretum, Yurim Park) for safe return drones such as finding lost children; and the 4th airspace (Wolpyeong-dong Administrative Welfare Center, Seo-gu Office) for urban and welfare delivery fields, each serving its respective role.

Heo Tae-jung, Mayor of Daejeon, said, “I hope that the designation of the drone special zone will provide an opportunity for drones to be used conveniently and safely in the region,” and added, “The city will actively cooperate with the government’s Digital New Deal and strive to become the ‘center of the drone industry’ to create a synergy effect for regional innovative growth.”
