[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Eun-young] JYP Entertainment apologized for the controversy over the similarity of the hanbok costumes worn by the girl group TWICE.
On the 11th, JYP Entertainment issued an official statement and apology through TWICE's official social media, saying, "Regarding the hanbok costumes worn by Dahyun and Chaeyoung for the Melody Project, the hanboks were purchased from a hanbok vendor, but we did not properly recognize the similarity," and "We sincerely apologize for this."
They added, "We have explained the situation and offered a deep apology to the designer," and "We will be more careful to ensure that such incidents never happen again."
Earlier, on the 10th, JYP Entertainment uploaded a music video cover of Rain and Park Jin-young's song "Naro Bakkwoja" performed by TWICE's Dahyun and Chaeyoung. As the video gained attention, the black suits and the elaborate hanbok costumes they wore also attracted interest.
However, netizens claimed that the hanbok costume worn by Dahyun was similar to the outfit worn by BLACKPINK member Jisoo during the filming of the "How You Like That" music video.
The stylist who participated in the production of BLACKPINK's hanbok costumes expressed displeasure on their personal SNS, posting TWICE's video along with the comment, "Huh? A custom costume of my design that I did not make?"
Netizens responded with comments such as "The jeogori is exactly the same," and "Did they think a self-produced costume was an off-the-rack product?"
