Gwangju City Supports Sports Class Vouchers for People with Disabilities

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 11th that it will implement a Disabled Sports Lecture Use Voucher Support Project to support the use of sports facilities by vulnerable disabled people.

The target group is low-income disabled people who are basic livelihood security recipients or near-poverty class aged 12 to 64 (based on birthdate from January 1, 1957, to December 31, 2009), and will receive support for sports lecture tuition fees of 80,000 KRW per month for up to 8 months.

Applications can be submitted by the 18th through the Disabled Sports Lecture Use Voucher website or by visiting the district office or administrative welfare center with jurisdiction over the resident registration address, and participants will be continuously recruited throughout the year depending on the application status by autonomous districts.

Among applicants, final participants will be selected after verifying eligibility for benefits and disability status, and tuition support will be available from April.

However, to prevent the spread of COVID-19 through group sports activities, the actual start date of voucher use may be adjusted.

Available facilities number about 70 and can be confirmed through the Disabled Sports Lecture Use Voucher website. Considering that there are fewer disabled sports lecture use facilities compared to affiliated sports lecture use facilities, continuous promotion will be conducted to gradually increase affiliated facilities.

This project has been implemented since 2019, and especially this year, due to the spread of COVID-19 significantly restricting sports participation by disabled people, the support age limit for beneficiaries has been expanded from 49 to 64 years old, and multiple lecture enrollments are now possible.

Shin Dong-ha, Director of the Sports Promotion Division of the city, said, “As the support age for beneficiaries has been expanded, we expect to strengthen the guarantee of opportunities for disabled people to participate in everyday sports activities, which were restricted last year due to COVID-19, and also provide great help to local sports facilities facing crisis due to the prolonged pandemic.”
